Making science and engineering exciting with Camp enGENIUS

A love of science, technology, engineering, and math begins at a young age. Organizations hoping to ignite passion and creativity in these fields partner with Camp enGENIUS, a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math)-focused summer camp for children in Calgary. Hexagon | NovAtel® was a Silver Sponsor for Camp enGENIUS, providing hands-on engineering experience with soldering irons, design software, and coding platforms. The NovAtel sponsorship helped to send six children to the camp in July and August through the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Calgary and Area program.

Camp enGENIUS, hosted by Engenuics, has been running extracurricular education programs at the University of Calgary for over 18 years. Engenuics works extensively with the University of Calgary Schulich School of Engineering to offer an annual training program. To give students these practical, hands-on engineering skills, the program relies upon high-tech companies for sponsorships and access to technology.

Three Camp enGENIUS Engineering Fields

The 2019 season saw three different camps featured at enGENIUS:

STEM, STEM, Everywhere introduced students to electrical, software, and computer engineering topics. Students built their confidence and demystified the technological world around us. Using games and activities as resources, instructors demonstrated how technology is a part of our everyday lives. They learned to create technology for themselves, including soldering and coding, to build radios, robotics, lights, and lasers.

I HEART Circuits focused on designing different circuits, making circuit boards, soldering them together to build basic electronics. The I HEART Circuits camp included an introduction to programming. Students learn to make these circuits and electronics work and integrate them into the other camp streams.

I HEART Code saw participants writing programs that ran on the circuits designed in the I HEART Circuits camp. Children in the I HEART Code stream worked alongside an experienced programmer to build a program that ran smoothly.

NovAtel is proud to sponsor the event. We share Engenuics’ belief in supporting people from all walks of life and identities to consider a career in STEM. Imagination and innovation will only increase with a diversity of perspectives to identify and solve current and future problems.
